Is Healing Really Possible?

Emotional healing is a difficult and often lifelong process that involves acknowledging, accepting and processing your past experiences and trauma. There is no quick fix or shortcut for healing, and every journey is different.

How To Know When You Are Ready To Heal

Healing can be a daunting task. Before embarking on your journey, it can be useful to examine your intentions and goals, and whether you are ready to do the work it takes to heal.

Ask yourself these questions to gain clarity on what you want to achieve from healing:

  • What am I hoping will change by healing?

  • How do I feel now, and how do I want to feel after healing? Am I prepared to cope with the uncomfortable feelings I may experience during healing?

  • How can I show myself compassion during this journey? Who or what will help me?

  • Am I ready to heal?

HOW TO HEAL FROM TRAUMA

There are many ways to heal from past traumatic experiences and emotional pain. The most effective method is to work with a therapist or licensed mental health professional. Their expert guidance can help you navigate the more complex and uncomfortable aspects of healing.

It can also be useful to find small ways of integrating healing into your daily life. Delving into traumatic memories can sometimes make you feel stuck in the past, so try practicing mindfulness techniques such as meditation to ground yourself in the present.

Another important aspect of healing is building a supportive community. We heal best in community, not in isolation. A support system of trusted friends and family can show you kindness, love and compassion, even when you are unable to show it to yourself.

INNER CHILD HEALING

To heal as an adult, you may find you need to explore healing your inner child first. This type of therapy involves addressing childhood wounds, processing these experiences and emotions, and learning how to provide for your own unmet needs now as an adult.

For those who experienced trauma in childhood, you may find these negative patterns repeating in adulthood. If you want to do things differently than how they were in your childhood, you’re going to have to do the work.

Our experiences growing up influence how we navigate relationships today. While we learned protective behaviors in the past, they may no longer serve us well and can even cause harm in our current connections.

For example, suppressing feelings can lead to resentment, and reacting impulsively to be heard or understood can escalate conflicts. These learned responses may have been how you protected yourself in your past but can be harmful to your relationships now.

It’s crucial to recognize these patterns, heal old wounds, and adopt healthier ways of connecting and communicating. This journey of growth and change begins with acknowledging the impact of our past experiences and consciously choosing a different path forward.

SO, IS HEALING REALLY POSSIBLE?

Everyone deserves to heal, and healing is absolutely possible!

Healing journeys are rarely linear; there will always be ups and downs. Sometimes it can be difficult to recognize that you are healing because healing isn't always about grand transformations; it's in the everyday moments, too.

The most important thing to remember on your journey is that healing is unique to each of us, and it's okay to have both good and tough days. Always be kind to yourself and show yourself compassion throughout your healing journey.

Facing your past trauma can be tough, but at Turning Point Counseling, we’re committed to helping you transition from a place of emotional struggle to a state of health and happiness.
