What is Internal Family Systems Therapy?
WHAT IS IFS?
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is an innovative and empowering approach to therapy that encourages you to access and understand the various parts of your personality, which are viewed as parts within a single mental system. Developed by Dr Richard Schwartz, IFS is based on the idea that the mind is naturally multiple and that healing involves bringing harmony to these internal parts.
The parts are categorized into managers, exiles, and firefighters:
Managers are responsible for maintaining a sense of order and protecting from pain.
Exiles carry pain and trauma. They are isolated from the system as a means of protection.
Firefighters extinguish the emotional distress caused by the Exiles through distraction.
Understanding how these parts interact is central to the therapeutic process of IFS.
WHAT ARE THE GOALS OF IFS THERAPY?
The main goals of IFS therapy are:
To build trust in the Self and empower the Self to be an effective leader
To create harmony and balance in the internal system
IS IFS EFFECTIVE?
Although IFS is a relatively new form of therapy, scientific studies have already shown positive results.
For example, one study in 2021 highlights that IFS therapy can be effective for people experiencing PTSD, particularly with childhood trauma. The flexibility of IFS also allows it to be integrated with other therapeutic approaches, making it a versatile and effective tool for improving mental well-being.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF IFS?
IFS has been applied to a variety of psychological issues, and is effective in transforming inner dynamics toward a more empowered state. The main benefits of IFS include:
Self-awareness, self-compassion and self-leadership
Improved emotional well-being and resilience
Healthier external relationships
Greater inner harmony and balance
